New members join Mercy board

DURANGO, Colo.— Mercy Regional Medical Center’s board of directors recently added two members: Sr. Sheila Devereux, RSM, and Richard Risk.

Sr. Devereux and Mr. Risk both possess extensive experience in healthcare leadership and administration, and most importantly, they share our organizational commitment to quality and service,” said Joanne M. Spina, Mercy's board chair. “Their skills and experience are a great fit for our community board, and we’re delighted to have them join the Mercy team.”

Risk is a retired health care executive with extensive health care consulting and hospital management experience. He spent more than 12 years as the chief executive officer of Oak Brook, Il.-based Advocate Health Care. Advocate is Chicago’s largest health care delivery organization with more than 4,600 physicians, 24,000 employees at 10 hospitals and 200 other sites of care. Risk holds a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Chicago. He has lived in Mancos since 2003.

Devereux is the director of Mercy Associates for the Omaha Sisters of Mercy Regional Community and a regional coordinator for Mercy Volunteer Corps. She has served as a board member at four other Catholic hospitals located in San Francisco, Calif.; Roseburg, Ore.; Omaha, Neb.; and Denver. Devereux replaces Peg Maloney, Sister of Mercy, whose term expired. Mercy board members serve three-year terms which can be renewed up to two times.

Other changes to Mercy’s board of directors include the departure of Richard Lawton, M.D., whose term expired, and the resignation of Ellen Roberts, who recently left Mercy’s board to focus on her new role as the State Representative of Colorado’s 59th House District. Board member Joe Murphy, M.D., is the new president of Mercy’s Medical Staff, while board member Mark Murphy, M.D., is the 2007 Medical Staff president-elect.

The Mercy Regional Medical Center Board of Directors is comprised of community volunteers and representatives from the hospital’s medical staff, founding congregation, and parent organization, Catholic Health Initiatives. Other board members include Jim Wanebo, vice chair; David Deaver III, M.D., secretary; Susan Martinez, treasurer; Donald Bader, M.D.; Sr. Sharon Ford; Robert Goodman, M.D.; Patrick Murphy; George Stahl; Corliss Taylor; Eugenia Miller, M.D.; Deborah Lee-Eddie; and Kirk Dignum.
