Public Service Announcement Durango, Colo. — Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Family Birth Center celebrated a milestone with the delivery of 1,000 babies for the second year in a row. Avin Ness Franklin, 6 lbs., 15 oz., son of Candice and James Franklin of Bloomfield, N.M, was delivered at 7:19 p.m. on December 24. “Having the thousandth baby was a total surprise,” said Candice, 28. “The hospital and staff were absolutely phenomenal and I would recommend anybody go there.” The hospital expects to deliver a total of 1,020 babies by the end of the year, which is slightly down from 2007’s record 1,045 deliveries. In 2006, 906 babies were delivered at Mercy, up from 842 in 2005. “We’re happy that people from all over the region trust us to help them through this special time in their lives,” said Heidi Thorsness, unit manager of Mercy’s Family Birth Center. “The staff here all love what they’re doing—It’s hard work, but it’s well worth it to help bring such joy into people’s lives.” Avin was delivered by certified nurse midwife Mary-Louise Walton of Southwest Midwives in Durango. Obstetricians, family practitioners, and midwives deliver babies at Mercy’s Family Birth Center. Avin has a three-and-a-half-year-old brother, Jice Havok Franklin.
