Mercy To Offer Workshop On Nonviolent Communication

Durango, CO - Mercy Regional Medical Center invites the community to attend the workshop, "Radical Compassion: An Experiential Introduction to Nonviolent Communication."

Participants will learn how to use Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's model for compassionate communication, which is used in healthcare, peacekeeping, educational, and economic settings worldwide. Workshop members will learn how to deal with major blocks to communication such as demands, diagnoses and blaming, and receiving critical and hostile messages without taking them personally, giving in, or losing self-esteem.

The workshop will be held on Sept. 15 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in conference room A on the Garden Level at Mercy Regional Medical Center. The cost is $20. An optional candlelight peace walk on Mercy's labyrinth will follow the workshop.

The workshop will be facilitated by certified nonviolent communication (NVC) trainers Jim and Jori Manske of the Albuquerque Center for Nonviolent Communication.

Mercy has trained more than 200 of its employees and providers in nonviolent communication during the past two years as part of a goal to improve communication among hospital workers. "We consider nonviolent communication to be one more of the healing modalities we use at Mercy. Clear communication among colleagues is an asset to the hospital's ability to provide continued outstanding patient and family care. Exposing the community to NVC is a way of promoting a healthier community," said Mission Leader and NVC Coordinator Diana McKenna.

For more information or to reserve a space for the workshop, call the MRMC Department of Spiritual Care at 764-2340.
