For Immediate Release
Public Service Announcement Durango, Colo. — In recognition of national Cover the Uninsured Week (March 22-28) parents, grandparents and other concerned adults can learn how to enroll children in low-cost state health insurance at the “Cover Our Kids” event on March 24 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Garden Terrace Café. Kari Smith of Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and Liza Koepp, La Plata Family Center health and family advocate, will provide information and assistance on how children can qualify and enroll in CHP+ and Medicaid. CHP+ is low-cost public health insurance for Colorado's uninsured children and pregnant women who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private health insurance. In February 2009, President Barack Obama and Congress reauthorized the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to cover more than four million more children. Forty-six million people, including nine million children, are uninsured and more than eight out of 10 are in working families, according to the Cover the Uninsured campaign website. The event is sponsored by Mercy’s Department of Mission and Spiritual Care. For more information about the “Cover Our Kids” event call 764-2340.
