Mercy Surgical Associates offers 24-hour general and trauma surgery coverage. Serving the urgent and often emergent needs of patients, Mercy Surgical Associates provides essential local access to surgical procedures. They currently offer general, pediatric, thoracic, and vascular surgical services. Mercy Surgical Associates is locally managed and operated by the Centura Health Physician Group, which integrates multispecialty and primary care physicians with hospitals and services across the state in a network that emphasizes the best technology and clinical capabilities.

Skilled Providers and Staff

All Mercy Surgical Associates doctors are certified by the American Board of Surgery and are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. They have over 60 years of combined surgical experience.

• Dr. Charles Black: Dr. Black is a general surgeon with special interest in upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, pediatrics, and laparoscopy. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his surgical training at Michigan State University.
• Dr. David Deaver: Dr. Deaver has been in the private practice of general surgery in Durango since completing his residency in 1984. He was a founding member of the original practice in 1993.
• Dr. Mark Stern: Dr. Stern has been in the private practice of general surgery since 1980. Upon completion of his surgical residency, he completed a fellowship in peripheral vascular surgery. He has been practicing in Durango since relocating from Los Angeles, Calif.
• Dr. Jay Quayle: Dr. Quayle relocated from St. Louis, Mo., where he trained at Washington University. He practices general, thoracic, and vascular surgery, and he has a special interest in endocrine and minimally invasive surgery.
