    Southwest Oncology: Medical Oncology

    Southwest Oncology opened in 2001 in a collaborative relationship with Durango Cancer Center to provide comprehensive and coordinated cancer care to patients needing medical treatment for cancer and to patients with blood disorders. Highly experienced oncology specialists participate in multidisciplinary reviews to ensure the right treatments are administered at the right time, based on evidence-based practice.

    The Durango Cancer Center: Radiation Oncology
    Operated by Centura Health Physician Group

    Durango Cancer Center offers radiation therapy and follow-up care for cancer patients. These services complement the advanced diagnostic services, nutrition counseling, surgical care, palliative care, hospice care and other services offered through Mercy Regional Medical Center. The clinic opened in 1994 and has provided radiation oncology services to over 3,000 patients. The facility is integrated into a comprehensive cancer center with Southwest Oncology, a medical oncology/hematology practice, and is part of the Centura Health Cancer Network.

    Services and Procedures:
    External Beam Radiation Therapy: directs radiation at tumor from outside the body. Intensely Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): distributes precise radiation doses to malignant tumors or specific areas within the tumor.Brachytherapy (high dose radiation): delivers radiation by placing radiation source(s) inside or next to the area requiring treatment.Low Dose Radiation (LDR) for prostate cancer

    Centura Health Cancer Network 
    The Centura Health Cancer Network facilities offer comprehensive care including diagnostics, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, access to clinical trials, dedicated cancer inpatient care, nurse navigation, genetic counseling, spiritual support, social work services, support groups, cancer prevention and screening programs, palliative care, hospice services, survivorship programs, and unique patient-centered programs that support patients and their families during treatment. Southwest Oncology and Durango Canter Center are integrated into the statewide Centura Health Cancer Network , which is comprised of five hospital-based cancer programs-including Mercy Regional Medical Center's-that are accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer.  

    ACoS Accreditation
    Mercy Regional Medical Center's Cancer Program is an accredited program of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), and has fulfilled the rigorous review of that organization since 1996, most recently receiving Approval with Commendation in 2009. The achievement of these standards places the overall program in the top 20 percent nationwide and assures continued achievement of the highest levels of quality, self-assessment, and improvement on behalf of our patients. Integration with Centura Health will provide additional support in terms of access to other specialists, research protocols, data analysis, and sharing of best practices.
