    The Orthopedic Center of Excellence began in 2005 when surgeons and staff at Mercy Medical Center began working collaboratively to improve clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and outcomes. The team reviewed the entire surgery process from the perspective of the patient, not the caregivers, and redesigned it to better meet patients' needs. In 2006, Mercy Medical Center became Mercy Regional Medical Center when it relocated to a brand new facility. In the new hospital, with its state-of-the-art technology, private patient rooms, and healing environment, the Center of Excellence has flourished.

    More hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed at Mercy Regional than at any other facility in Southwest Colorado. From January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2013, 667 elective hip procedures and 1,124 knee procedures were performed.

    We continuously monitor a host of quality indicators to ensure the level of care we provide is exceptional. Our goal is simple: excellent clinical care and continuous improvement. The entire team reviews quality data every quarter, identifying best practices and looking for opportunities to improve standards of care and customer service. By reducing variability in standards of care among participating providers, we are able to more quickly identify and adopt best practices. Low patient-to-nurse ratios ensure each patient gets the personalized attention and nursing care they deserve.

Through extensive patient education and thorough communication, we ensure that our patients and their coaches know exactly what to expect and what is expected of them.

    Personalized, thorough pre-operative education is essential, as well-informed patients have better outcomes. Because patients’ time is valuable, pre-operative education and testing are done in one day, so patients travel to the hospital only once.

    Patients receive detailed, educational notebooks that explain everything they need to know about their procedure and what to do before and after their surgery. Newsletters and in-room posters outline daily goals for recovering patients so they know what to expect and what their daily recovery goals are.

    The hospital’s private, tastefully decorated patient rooms and quiet, healing environment imbue a sense of wellness and comfort that promotes healing of body, mind, and spirit. Patient rooms include:

    We believe in and have seen the benefits of treating the whole person – body, mind and spirit. Our Integrative Care Services team helps patients develop a personalized surgical plan that empowers patients to make certain choices that can enhance their surgical experience. Through our TLC program, music therapy, gentle massage, aromatherapy, acupuncture, and prayer or mediation are available to patients before or after surgery, at no charge. Research has shown these therapies can reduce anxiety and a patient’s perception of pain.
