  • Diabetes Education in Southwest Colorado

  • Mercy’s diabetes educators provide comprehensive education and management services to patients diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Our program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and offers the following services:

    • Ongoing diabetes education about medications, nutrition management, health monitoring, physical activity, acute and chronic complications, lifestyle changes, pre-conception and pregnancy guidelines
    • Insulin initiation and management; insulin pump training
    • Continuous glucose monitoring analysis
    • Group education and individual sessions
    • In-office A1C testing, i.e. average blood sugar over a three-month period
    • Medical nutrition therapy, including nutrition plans, management for diabetes, weight control, celiac disease, renal impairment, hypertension, lipid control, cancer, and disease prevention
    • Access to medically supervised fitness program designed for people who have a chronic disease
    • Pediatric endocrinologist consultations, including on-site telemedicine clinic (monthly) and in-person clinic (twice per year)
    • Access to on-site adult endocrinologist with provider referral

    Are you at risk?

    You are at an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes if you:

    • Are overweight or obese
    • Have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes
    • Are African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American/Latino heritage
    • Have a prior history of gestational diabetes or birth of at least one baby weighing more than nine pounds
    • Have high blood pressure
    • Have abnormal cholesterol
    • Are physically inactive


    Lower your risk

    The onset of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by taking steps to lower your risk. By staying at a healthy weight, eating well, and being active, you can make a difference to live a longer, healthier life.
